What’s the Best Way to Get to Milford Sound / Piopiotahi?

Milford Sound / Piopiotahi is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most iconic natural wonders. The journey to this gem, is its own adventure. Whether you’re travelling from Queenstown or Te Anau, by plane, helicopter or by road, you can expect incredible views no matter which you choose. Let us help you decide how you get there.

Option 1: Self-Drive

Driving gives you the most freedom to stop and explore the landscape at your own pace. The route from Queenstown to Milford Sound takes about 4–5 hours one way, or 2–2.5 hours from Te Anau. You’ll pass stunning lakes, wide valleys, short walks and travel through the Homer Tunnel.

The Milford Road is remote. There’s little to no mobile reception for most of the route, and there aren’t any shops or services. It can be windy and is open to weather and environmental factors, especially in the winter, when avalanches can close the road and cars are required to carry snow chains.

If you decide to drive, start early, allow extra time for scenic stops and road disruptions, research the weather conditions and be prepared.

Option 2: Coach Tour

For a more relaxing experience, consider a guided coach tour from Queenstown or Te Anau. These tours include stops at scenic lookouts and come with local commentary, so you can learn about the region’s history, landscape and wildlife.

It’s a long day from Queenstown (13 hours return). Our luxury coaches are comfortable, and you’ll enjoy sitting back to relax and take in the views. You can also choose to depart from Te Anau, a couple of hours closer to Milford Sound, making it a shorter day trip.

Option 3: Scenic Flight

If you’re short on time or want a truly memorable experience, opt for a scenic flight to Milford Sound. From Queenstown, the flight is about 40 minutes each way with incredible views of the Southern Alps, glaciers, and Fiordland. We recommend flying by fixed-wing plane with Milford Sound Scenic Flights or by helicopter with The Helicopter Line

Can’t decide? You can also choose all the options with a coach, cruise and scenic flight product to experience this UNESCO World Heritage site by road and by air.

Whichever way you choose to get there, the journey to Milford Sound is just as magnificent as the destination. Plan well, leave early, and don’t forget your camera. This is one of the most photogenic corners of the world.
