Where to Base Yourself for a Milford Sound / Piopiotahi Day Trip?

When you’re planning a day trip to Milford Sound/Piopiotahi for a cruise, where you decide to base yourself impacts travel time, comfort, and ease. Your main options are Queenstown, Te Anau or Milford Sound; each offers distinct advantages.

Here’s a deeper look at each option, plus essential driving tips.

Queenstown

New Zealand’s adventure capital, with the most restaurants, bars, nightlife, and activities before and after your trip to Milford Sound.

By road, it is between 4 and 5 hours each way, with world-class scenic stops along the way. Factoring in extra time for stops, the return trip from Queenstown can take 12-13 hours, so make sure you are well rested and set off early, allowing plenty of time. If you don’t have that much time, taking a scenic flight by helicopter or plane can reduce travel time and turn the trip into a half-day adventure.

Te Anau

The closest town centre to Milford Sound, just 2 hours by road, allowing for more frequent or longer stops along the stunning Milford Road. As a quieter lakeside town, it’s perfect for unwinding close to nature. Tackle a section of the Kepler Track for alpine panoramas, explore the Glowworm caves after a stroll along the lakefront or go for a thrilling jet boat ride. Te Anau is less busy than Queenstown but still offers solid dining, supermarkets and cosy stays.

Milford Sound / Piopiotahi

Staying right in Milford Sound means waking up fiord-side to witness sunrise and sunset right at the Fiords’ shores. A surreal, remote experience few get to enjoy.

This unique setting immerses you in Fiordland’s wild heart, with easy access to short walks and the cruise terminal. Accommodation and facilities are extremely limited and often book out months in advance. If you prioritise scenery over convenience, this is the option for you, but book early.

Important considerations:

  • No matter your base, if you are driving into Milford Sound, fill up your gas tank in Te Anau. There are no gas stations past this point on the road to Milford Sound.
  • Driving conditions vary greatly with the weather season to season. Make sure to monitor nzta.govt.nz for live updates on road conditions.
